The other day I went to a carnival. Normally, I find them kind of hokey, but my girlfriend loves them. She loves the rides, she loves the games, she loves the junk food – especially the cotton candy. Most of all, she loves the fortune tellers. She can’t get enough of palmistry, psychic readings and zodiac sign astrology. She pretends to believe that they are nothing, but a cheap form of entertainment. Deep down inside I think she really believes in them. When she gets an astrological signs reading, she can’t stop talking about it for weeks.

I have to admit, I do have some appreciation for the theater of it all. The zodiac signs astrology tent was impressive. It was all black and covered with pictures of stars. At first glance, they didn’t appear to have any pattern. When you got close it was apparent that they were connected into pictures of the zodiac signs. Somehow, the closer we got to the zodiac sign astrology tents, the more details we could see. Soon we caught glimpses of artistic renditions of the different zodiac animals circumscribed about the stars. It really was impressive.

She made me wait outside. She always does because she knows I can’t take zodiac sign astrology seriously. For her, it is a sort of game of make believe. I was able to watch through a crack in the door and it was all quite entertaining. The psychic astrologer asked her why she had come. She replied, intoning with solemnity that she wished to receive a glimpse of the future. The psychic thought that she was a believer and my girlfriend gave the impression of being one. The reading that she was given was pretty funny. I guess that zodiac sign astrology is based on giving readings that are so general that anyone will believe them. There’s bound to be something that will strike a chord within the astrological reading. In her case, there were a few details that seemed a bit strange. They knew about her upbringing, her relationship with her father and mother, and the number brothers and sisters she had. It could have been just a coincidence, but it makes me a little bit more curious about zodiac sign astrology. I wonder if there’s anything to it after all.

How superstitious are you? This is a funny topic because so many different people have so many mixed views and opinions. I laugh my butt off when I speak with some religious fanatics. They are so adamant and absolutely positive that God and heaven exist. And once we die, our spirit is released from this physical realm and progresses on to heaven. Okay, that’s fair enough. I’m not knocking it in any way. Then if you bring up the idea of ghosts, they look at you like you’re absurd. This makes no sense. So an earth bound entity is completely ridiculous, but spirits, God and heaven are totally acceptable and realistic? Give me a break! Talk about naive. Some people only believe what makes them feel comfortable. I just think it’s lame to say you believe so strongly and then come off like a hypocrite. Grow up folks! And then there’s astrology readings and tarot cards. What is your take on these?

I have never been big into signs and fate. The whole astrology readings phenomenon throws me for a loop. I mean think about this for a moment. Have you ever checked into your personal astrology readings or horoscope? The ones that go with your birth sign? It’s more than a little vague and it’s very far fetched. In all honesty, I think someone was very bored one day and they decided to develop a new thing. It was called the horoscope. I read mine last month and I think it could be applied to virtually anyone and everyone. I think it said something like “You have five fingers, but your toes are shorter than them. You like to eat food. In fact it may be crucial to your very existence. You will have to make a decision within the next few days.” Wow, is that astute insight or what? Okay, so maybe it didn’t read exactly like that, but pretty close.
